During our shared reading this week we read and reread "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see". This is a great kindergarten text, as most are already familiar with it which allows us to look closer at words, spacing and sentences. We are also using this text to help us recognize the color words. Other big books we shared were "I see Colors" and "Where do Color Monsters Live?"
Rhyming is a large part of kindergarten literacy. It's also part of phonemic awareness for children. We practice rhymes daily with our "Name of the day" routine. We also try to reintroduce and practice nursery rhymes. These are photos of students building Humpty Dumpty. They are presently hanging on the lockers. We also create and keep a nursery rhyme folder where children switch out a characters name for their own.
I introduced the steps in our Reader's Workshop this week. Students should now understand that workshop will begin with a brief mini lesson, followed by independent reading and concluded with a share back time together. Students loved finding fun places to snuggle with their book bins. Eventually we will add a partner reading component. Our mini lessons this week we're on parts of a book (chart shown below), how reader's listen, reader's read top to bottom and left to right what and where we read, how we take care of books and book baskets. I have been passionate about creating a classroom library that has a wide variety of interests, but with that comes a lot of maintenance:)
Numbers and what they represent will continue to be a focus throughout the year. On Friday students enjoyed working with paper punches, stamps/ink and stickers to create a number chart. I hope your child was excited to bring his/hers home!
Graphs were introduced this week. We talked about how graphs give us information. Each day of school we have been graphing the weather. We have a dry erase graph we will be using throughout the year with assorted questions. Our first this week was "Are you a girl or a boy?". The graph I believe
your children enjoyed most was the cookie graph. Each student tried 3 cookies and graphed his/her favorite. We found that more children in our class liked sugar cookies.
Several of our math lessons this week worked with sorting. We practiced sorting groups of animals, buttons, magnetic letters, misc. toys, and rocks. We also played the "guess my rule" game where we sorted by students attributes, such as children with dark hair, or people wearing pink shirts. Ask your child some of the ways s/he can sort.

Of all students, Alivia had the most incredible week ...she became a big sister! Congratulations to Alivia's family and welcome to her baby brother, Jackson.
