Dear Parents,
Today we found that one of our little ones unfortunately has lice. It's common in schools as we all know and though it is majorly time consuming to rid, it is controllable. I took the liberty to check all of my students heads today and would like to share some tips with you to help prevent the spread of it.
My biggest concern is that students' coats all hang together on the coat rack and must be on the rack as we roll the rack to lunch each day. I'm asking that each of you dry your child's coat (and hat) on high heat (it wouldn't hurt to wash it either). Tomorrow, please send your child with a large draw string, plastic garbage bag. It will help to demonstrate to your child packing coat, hat, snow pants (if needed) into the bag and show them how they might hang it on a hook with it tightly cinched. You will need to put your child's name on the bag in large letters so that s/he can find it in a timely manner.
You will also want to check your child's head throughout the week. If s/he got it very recently it may be hard to find for a few days. Lice lay approximately 6 eggs a day, so within 3 days it should be easier to see. There are websites that show photos of what you're looking for. The eggs are usually near the scalp stuck to a hair shaft and are teardrop shape.
I had wonderful parent helpers this morning pack up all stuffed animals, pillows, chair covers etc. We will keep these things in bags in a storage room for two weeks.
