In the past two weeks…
What a busy time of year it has been in our classroom! We were able to spend time learning about our past presidents and some of the important roles they played making our country what it is today. We read several books about presidents, our country and enjoyed our big book, I Pledge Allegiance.
We also have been working up to our hundredth and 101 day of school. Of course we had to spread lots of love throughout the class using many heart/love filled learning activities.
Below are photos of a penny experiment we did. We talked about pennies and The Statue of Liberty being created from copper. However, things like wind, salt, rain can turn these a greenish color.
Word Study:
• Using known words and adding endings with –ed
• Work with sight words
• Review of syllables
Writer’s and Reader’s Workshops:
Students put great effort towards creating a book from their small moments/personal narratives. We continued to read quality children’s literature (mentor texts) showing how stories are made up of different moments or how the author used setting or how they planned to separate parts of the story onto different pages (this is still hard for most kindergarten students).
Also, within our Reader’s Workshop we focused a lot on retelling stories for comprehension. This was practiced as a whole group with read alouds and also with partner reading where students retold familiar stories from their book boxes. Ask your child about echo and chorus reading when you get a chance…they practiced both with their reading partners throughout the past two weeks during reader’s workshop.
As an ad-on to our writing we wrote about what we might do if we were president. These were delightful and each child shared his/hers by reading to the class.
Math:
Students worked with learning how to count and record tally marks. This can be confusing, but is something I model to them daily during calendar time. We reviewed graphing, counting, sorting etc.
We began our learning with money. We read informational books about money and how it is used to trade for goods or services. We started learning about the penny and its’ worth. Students had fun trying to find the Lincoln on the Lincoln monument on the back of the penny. We learned a penny game with dice and will continue with the nickel when we return.
Our hundreds theme was filled with counting, recognizing and playing with numbers.
Work Stations:
Over the past two weeks we worked on various skills through work stations. The photos below should give you a good idea of our work.
Extras:
• A special thanks to Caroline-Daisy’s and Hadley’s moms for supplying our class this week with extra snacks. Thanks too for remembering to send snacks. There were fewer students needing extra snacks this week.
• Thanks to Andy’s dad and Evan’s mom for volunteering to help in the art room with our class.
We spent a short time visiting our 5th grade buddies and making them valentines this week:
Upcoming Dates:
March 6th : No School for students (teacher professional development day)
March 30th: Last day before spring break
April 9th: School resumes
